Project Meow’s Kitten Club

Kitten care before rehoming – and the mother desexed FREE

What Is Project Meow’s Kitten Club?

Our Kitten Club Program focus is providing all kittens “Care Before Homes” to reduce the number of kittens going onto new homes before they have had their essential vet work completed.

Mum is not left out of this either! We celebrate their Mum’s last litter by providing her with FREE DESEXING. She matters a whole lot in this. Did you know she can fall pregnant while nursing kittens. Oh, and should Dad be around we include him too!

Care before homes looks like this;

  • Foster care – Kittens are placed with a Geelong Animal Rescue – GAR foster carer in their home to be nourished, spoilt and cared for while the vet work is being completed. They learn all about home life, indoor life, humans, and sometimes even other pets while the carer learns about their personalities.
  • Desexing – As soon as they are big enough. This ensures they are not going to become tomorrow’s breeders. Kittens can breed from the age of 4 months.
  • Microchipping – Their lifelong identification & voice should they ever be found lost or be handed to a vet or animal pound or shelter.
  • Parasite treatment – Fleas & worms can over burden their tiny bodies & be fatal.
  • Vaccinations – To protect them from viruses their little bodies will battle to beat should they encounter them.
  • Adoptions – Great homes are sought via an application. The foster carer who has lovingly cared for them is by now well acquainted with the kittens so a well-matched family / new owner will stem from this beautiful process. We love this comforting process as it often means we have many updates on their new life.
  • If your cat is nursing kittens or expecting kittens, we can offer you lots of support with the kittens and their mum while she nurses them. Talk to us about our respite and transitional care for mums-n-bubs.

Should you or a family member wish to have one of your kittens the adoption package that includes everything above can be arranged. Human desire for a kitten should never be the priority. The kittens’ needs must come first. Adoption fees are cost effective health care for your feline friend & range from $200 – $300.

Cats are a lifelong commitment & not just for the kitten phase. They rely heavily on us for ongoing care. Monthly flea treatments, worming every 3 months, quality food and the expense of booster vaccines and incidental vet visits. They can live 14 – 21 years so we must look that far ahead in our own lives when taking on a feline friend.

Giving kittens away too early is dangerous for them. Their mum has much to teach them. Just because they have started eating food does not mean it is time to go. At times it may appear she is not interested in them anymore however she is watching over them and will act should she feel they are in danger or need to be disciplined. Often kittens that are given away never get their essential vet care & are left vulnerable, die, are neglected, or abused & of course start their own breeding cycle. Our pathway is focused on their safety, health & well-being giving them a lovely strong start in life & a safe path into their new homes.

Isn’t that what we all want for them? Safety and a good life.

We strongly recommend all kittens from the litter come through our program rather than ever be given away or retained.

Safely rehoming kittens

Did you know?

  • Kittens & Cats are indiscriminate breeders. They will breed with siblings, offspring, parents, and anything else that meows.
  • A kitten can start breeding at 4 months old.
  • A pregnancy lasts 60 – 65 days.
  • A Kitten can be nursing her own litter at 6 – 8 months old.
  • A female can fall pregnant while nursing kittens. So, sadly your kitten could be having her 2nd litter at just 12 months old.
  • Pregnancy & birth is incredibly hard on her body so she will need to increase her food intake. It is best to feed her quality kitten food for the calories & nourishment so she can supply quality milk for her kittens.
  • Kittens needs their mum up to at least 7 weeks to learn skills & manners because she is not just a food source to them.
  • It costs more to help her raise kittens than to desex her.
  • None of this is the cat’s fault. How could it be when they rely on us for everything?

  • Desexing

Without all this they are at such awful risk.
